What Turns a Fallen Log into a Donut Shop?

What turns a fallen log into a donut shop? The right setting and a child's imagination, of course. At Marbles Farm, creativity comes easily for the children as they discover fun in the outdoors. This activity wouldn’t have been nearly as fun if it were teacher directed. With the children directing the fun, there were multiple flavors of donuts, with sprinkles or without, a money system based on sticks, trading off on who got to be the shopkeeper, and lots of sharing and smiles.

Children have natural creative powers. We see this every day at Marbles Farm. One day it’s a donut shop, the next day it is a puddle turned into a fishing hole. This past week the children turned bark that had fallen off tree stumps into books and the stumps into the library. As children play in this way they talk, they socialize, they share, and they learn about boundaries of acceptable behavior.

As one expert put it,

Children learn as they play. Most importantly, in play children learn how to learn.
