The adage "a picture is worth a thousand words" refers to the notion that a complex idea can be conveyed with just a single picture.
The preschool children in this photo loved taking on their pretend identities as they turned tree stumps into a truck that was taking them to run errands and shop for treats and presents for a pretend birthday party. The concept of how pretend play develops imagination along with critical skills such as executive function, creativity, and communication in children is taught at Marbles Farm.
The most recent recommendation from the World Health Organization speaks clearly of the need to get young children outside playing and learning.
"Children between the ages of two and four should not have more than one hour of sedentary screen time each day. The limiting, and in some cases eliminating, screen time for children under the age of 5 will result in healthier adults."
But taking away the iPad and other electronic devices is only part of the solution, the researchers said. Children under five should also get more exercise (three hours of physical activity per day)and sleep (at least 10 hours per night) to develop better habits that will stave off obesity and diseases in adolescence and adulthood.
We invite you to help your preschooler receive a daily dose of pretend play, hours of physical activity in a natural outdoor setting, and--cross your fingers Mom--a really good night's sleep when they return home from a preschool day at Marbles Farm.
